Hi everyone! I have my own campus radio show, and every week I play songs that relate to a certain theme. I was thinking about doing a show dedicated to Walt Whitman. Do you all have any song suggestions? If you want, maybe explain why a song reminds you of him and/or his work. Also, what kind of music do you think he’d be into?
Here is what I have so far:
- “Yes I’m Changing” by Tame Impala
- I thought this song accurately reflects Whitman’s belief in constant self-transformation. I think the lines “There’s a world out there and it’s calling my name/And it’s calling yours, girl it’s calling yours too” demonstrate unity and Whitman’s urgency to travel and discover the world.
- “Walkin’ in the Arizona Sun” by Mordicai Jones
- This song is about experiencing enlightenment in the Arizona desert. I especially like the lines “All is full, all is nice, and all is well/ But when I turn I can see my fellow man.” This sense of comradeship and contentment in the natural world reminds me so much of Whitman’s optimism.
- “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
- I could imagine Whitman singing this song to all of his readers. It’s so intimate and peaceful. “Staring at the fire/ For hours and hours while I listen to you/ Play your love songs all night long for me.”
- “Space Song” by Beach House
- Something about this gorgeous song screams Whitman to me. It’s probably the intimate lyrics (“Somewhere in these eyes/ I’m on your side”). Also, the song’s ethereal vibes of the dancing synths, soft vocals, and drumbeat make you feel like weightless, which reminds me of Whitman’s ideas on the body, soul, and divinity.
Walt Whitman Playlist

OH MY GOD.
Life in the City by the Lumineers: is Walt walking down the streets of Manhattan in “Give Me the Splendid Silent Sun. “…But I’d be glad to see Manhattan for once.”
“Wherever I Go” by the National Parks. It gives me a little Whitmania thinking about traveling through nature finding home IN nature.
And lastly, “Beautiful Life” by The Collection. This one you just have to listen. Once you listen, it’s not hard.
PLEASE let us know when the show is airing!!! I would love to listen. 😀
Thanks Carleigh!! I’ll let you know when I do the show 🙂
I also may have an Thing for playlists made after certain lines of poems and may have ones for Walt, Emily Dickinson, and Virginia Woolf already…

ahhh I’m following this right away! :’D
BETH, I DO SO LOVE THIS QUESTION. My first thought was Below My Feet by Mumford and Sons, <–– person who still listens to Mumford and Sons in 2021, I know, don't at me. Lyrics-wise, I also thought of Good Night, New York by Vienna Teng – maybe not a Rugged American Masculinity kind of song, but if you look up the lyrics I think you might see what I mean. ALSO HOZIER'S TO NOISE MAKING (SING)!!! Apparently I'm very passionate about this subject, I'll be sure to comment if I think of more.
Thank you, Katia!
Also, I definitely still listen to Mumford and Sons :^)
TO NOISE MAKING (SING)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this Beth!! Very excited for when you do the show! I just want to say I completely agree with to noise making (sing) AND if you like I really love Mitski and I think her song “My body is made of crushed up stars” is a little Whitman if you are interested!
