(In no particular order, because I couldn’t possibly rank these.)
Item one: nice one, Walt. Really going for a certain kind of appeal here. I’ll be honest, much as I’d love to sit here and make jokes about Hot Walt Whitman, looking at this image for too long catapults me into the brainspace of a young man in the nineteenth century who’s about to risk it all to write a really embarrassing letter. It would start, “Dear Mr. Whitman, I am a great admirer of your poetry. Your poetry is so great!” We’re moving on.
Item two: his big coat. His jaunty little lounge. His tasteful beard. This one feels more regular; looking at this one makes me, Katia, want to go back in time and be his friend! Victor Hugo and probably most nineteenth-century men have been photographed in something resembling this pose but none of them have maintained as much raw panache while doing so.
Item three: he is looking at me!!! Another A+ beard moment here. I know nineteenth century photography didn’t exactly sport a wide array of poses but some people were still better at it than others. He’s contemplating. He is Thinking! Check out his slightly raised eyebrow!
Item four: I’m about to get emo on the Walt Whitman And Emily Dickinson Blog and it’s only week two but …. look at him. We don’t have paintings of writers with half-closed eyes! Only the spontaneity of photography could produce this image!!!!! He wrote a poem about this one!
Item five: his kind eyes.

So– I have had the privilege to see dozens of artifacts from the Library of Congress Whitman collection in a private viewing. And one of the things I saw was a pair of Whitman’s eyeglasses on which one eye was glazed over because of damage to eyesight from his strokes. Too. Much. I will post some of my pics soon.

I love the selection of photos you chose. If I had to pick my favorite from among them, I think my favorite would be picture #4. His almost closed eyes make me think that he is looking down at something like a book. As a bookworm myself, I love that idea and thus the picture.
When it comes to all of the pictures in general, I am torn between two photos. https://whitmanarchive.org/multimedia/zzz.00107.html. https://whitmanarchive.org/multimedia/zzz.00123.html.
In the first photo, Whitman looks like he is leaning down slightly to listen to what the child is saying to him. I also think that this photo has the most “movement,” if you know what I mean. Unlike the rest of the photos which look like poses, this picture looks like it was taken without the subjects’ notice.
The second photo is of Whitman close to the end of his life, staring out the window (or so I imagine) from his chair. He looks so content to just sit and watch, as if children are playing in the yard outside.
Now, whether my imaginings have anything to do with the real Walt Whitman or the scene around the picture, I don’t know. However, this “stories” are what make them my favorites.
