I really enjoyed our class discussion today and the places it took us. I wanted to kind of dive a little bit deeper into the idea of Emily Dickinson making the reader/audience a safe space, or a comfort place like Dr. Scanlon was talking about. Where else in Dickinson’s writing do we see this? I know we haven’t gotten to her poems yet, but is this something we see in her poems as well?

Specifically, I wanted to talk about the letter poems that are in the module for this week. Not only is it beautiful in an of itself to see Dickinson’s handwriting, but to be able to experience the intimacy of these letters is breathtaking. I would sit here an analyze her handwriting but I certainly do not have a degree for that! This also touches a little bit on what we were talking about in terms of her personal life, and how these letters transcribe that. We see this intimacy in her letters to Susan as well as her letters to Austin.

I thought this article was interesting: https://www-jstor-org.umw.idm.oclc.org/stable/25088726?sid=primo&seq=6#metadata_info_tab_contents (it’s available through UMW if you want to check it out) and informative about Dickinson’s relationship with Sue, and how that is seen through her letters.
