AGHHHH after today’s class. What drew me to Dickinson and Whitman to begin with was their role as “ethical nature writers” and I DO think this is a valuable way to look at their work. They both connect poetry and science, they both value nature for what it is not for what it has, and they both understand and respect nature’s mystery. I have made it long enough without bringing Mary Oliver into class and I cannot stand it any longer.

Gerhardt uses this definition to further her explanation of environmental humility: “Man is not at the centre, but understood to be a part of a continuum of nature and culture in which human beings both influence and are influenced by settings” (Gerhardt 15). I want to share Mary’s poem “Shadows” which is, well, maybe exactly this.
