Hey everyone! I have recently been OBSESSED with Lil Nas X’s Montero, especially in light of the controversy he has faced over his song and music video. For those who may be unaware, Lil Nas X released a song called “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” which featured a music video that heavily parallels biblical scenes. The video portrays Lil Nas X running away from his sexuality, but eventually falling into line with it. From there, he is persecuted to death by a crowd of statues of himself, representing how he has persecuted himself throughout his life. From there, he begins to ascend to heaven, but instead rides a stripper pole to Hell, where he seduces the Devil and kills him, taking over the thrown. For the most part, this is the farthest thing from a Whitman and Dickinson class there is. However, as I was reading “The Snake,” one of the few poems published during Dickinson’s life that is featured on the archive, I couldn’t help but think of the scene in this music video where Lil Nas X is forced to face his sexuality up front. I will link the video for context below. Is any one else obsessed with Montero?
