Hi everyone! I don’t know if any of you are in to Beat Generation literature, but I happened to be perusing through some material by Allen Ginsberg this evening, and I stumbled across his poem “A Supermarket in California,” where the speaker (whom I would like to suppose is Ginsberg himself) imagines himself following Walt Whitman through a supermarket, contemplating what they might see and experience together. I don’t know a lot about Ginsberg, but I think it’s perhaps safe to say, and at least clear from this poem, that Ginsberg was heavily influenced and inspired by Whitman. Definitely check it out for a fun, thoughtful read!

A Supermarket in California
Vanessa, this poem is incredible and opens up so many questions! It’s so fun to imagine Whitman in such a common (mundane?) modern place. I can’t figure out if he would have loved the grocery store (for bringing so many different lives together) or hated it (for the materialism of it all). Either way, there’s definitely something magical about the liminality (and universality) of the grocery store itself and Ginsberg seems to really capture both of those qualities in the poem. There’s so much loneliness in the poem, too – the supermarket seems to serve as a reprieve from this loneliness, the balm to block out “shade to shade, lights out in the houses.” It raises questions of connection between poets and readers. Ginsberg touches Whitman’s poems – “I touch your book”. He walks with him through the streets dreaming of lost things. He imagines that Whitman must have felt as lonely as he did, at times. Imagining him in this way allows Ginsberg to connect with him deeply in the present moment. Above all, Ginsberg seems to be saying that even though we may never meet those whose work we engage with, their lives are still a part of ours, even during mundane everyday experiences (or especially during those experiences).
