I can’t get over Dickinson’s use of the Master in her letters or the little names that she refers to herself as in those letters. Erkilla refers to the use of “Master” as Dickinson’s love crisis, but has no clear understanding of who or what the “Master” is meant to be. Like it could be God, society, or even Sue. The idea that society is Dickinson’s “Master,” and that she must be delicate like a “Daisy,” is one analysis versus the idea that she is calling out to God. I prefer the idea that maybe the “Master” is Sue, and that she writes these letters addressed to the “Master,” to formally address the pain she fills when parted from Sue, the master of her heart. However, I maybe reading into their relationship too much. None of us really know who the “Master” was, for all we know it was actually a letter meant for herself. If anyone has an idea on who the “Master,” feel free to share.
